This season’s top goalscorer race will be interesting to follow. For the first time since the 2003/04 season, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be a part of the race.

This is significant because both players have been the league’s top scorer in 11 of the last 12 seasons, so a new player seems destined to take over the reins.

Luis Suarez is the only player to have ever broken the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly. He scored 40 league goals for Barcelona in the 2015/16 season, which earned him the honor of being the league’s top scorer that season.

During the 2020/21 season, Suarez scored 21 league goals and helped Atletico Madrid clinch the league title.

Karim Benzema has also improved his tally in the last few seasons. Though he’s never been the league’s top scorer, he’s still one of the bookies’ favorites this season.

How Is The Winner Decided?

For a player to be crowned La Liga’s top scorer, they need to score the most number of league goals. If two or more players score the same number of goals, then they both share the achievement.

This means that bets made on either player will still be paid out. The league’s top goalscorer is also given the Pichichi trophy to celebrate that achievement.

However, La Liga’s governing body doesn’t officially recognize the Pichichi Trophy since it’s an award that is given by Marca, a Spanish sports newspaper.

La Liga Top Goalscorer Betting Odds Report

Without Messi and Ronaldo, the burden of being the league’s goal-scoring favorite falls on different players this season.

Luis Suarez and Karim Benzema are the favorites, while the likes of Sergio Aguero, Antoine Griezman, and Memphis Depay—players who moved in the summer—also look like they can bag several goals this season.

A Barcelona or Real Madrid player has been the top scorer in the last 12 seasons, but that may change this season.

The Favorites

Luis Suarez – Barcelona let Suarez go last season, but the Uruguayan proved that he can still lead the line. He scored 21 goals last season and was instrumental in helping Atletico Madrid win the title for the first time since 2014.

He led the goalscoring charts in 2016 when he was still at Barcelona and is heavily favored to do so again this season.

Karim Benzema – Benzema has been in outstanding form since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. The French international has scored more than 20 goals in each of the last three seasons, something that he only ever did twice during Ronaldo’s Real Madrid era.

Obviously, this is because he’s been trusted to lead the line, and he has shown that he can do so. His recent form has been so good that Didier Deschamps recalled him to the France squad for Euro 2020.

Now that he’s brimming with sky-high confidence, Benzema looks likely to surpass the 23 goal tally that he notched last season.

Memphis Depay – Depay, a Dutch international, has had a topsy-turvy career. He failed to impress at Manchester United, but he redeemed himself at Lyon.

He scored 20 league goals last season while playing for Lyon and was also included in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

He joined Barcelona in the summer transfer window and will be eager to prove that he can shine in La Liga as well.

Gerard Moreno – Villarreal’s no. 7 had a great 2020/21 season. He scored 23 goals last season and was the league’s second-best goalscorer. He ended the season with 30 goals in all competitions and won the Europa League as well.

Despite not shining in Euro 2020, Moreno is still expected to score lots of goals this season.

Antoine Griezmann – Griezmann will play for Atletico Madrid this season after Barcelona and Atleti agreed to a one-year loan deal. He’s had a tough time at Barcelona and wasn’t able to match his Atletico Madrid form, but he finally has the chance to redeem himself at his former club.

He scored 13 league goals last season and will want to improve that tally this season. With a rejuvenated Luis Suarez by his side, we may see a different Griezmann this season.

The Contenders

Sergio Aguero – Aguero joined Barcelona this season on a free transfer. Though he’s no longer in his prime, he’s still a deadly and clinical finisher. He won the Premier League golden boot in the 2014/15 season and will be eager to prove that he can also be La Liga’s top scorer this season.

Vinicius Junior – Unlike players like Benzema, Vinicius has struggled to be consistent. His finishing has been his major downfall, but he’s slowly been improving on that season after season.

He only scored three league goals last season, but he’s had a strong start to this season and has already surpassed his previous tally.

Youssef En-Nesyri – Moroccan forward En-Nesyri was impressive last season. He scored 18 league goals for Sevilla, a tally that was only bettered by four other players.

Despite a lot of interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, he’s still at Sevilla and will want to improve his worth by notching more goals this season.

Alexander Isak – Alexander Isak is another young, sought-after attacker who is wanted by many top European clubs. The youngster scored 17 goals for Real Sociedad last season and helped them finish fifth in the league.

Now, in his third La Liga season, he’ll be hoping to increase his tally and truly cement his worth.

Iago Aspas – Aspas has been a steady performer for Celta Vigo. He scored 14 league goals last season and helped the club achieve a top-ten finish. Since he rejoined Celta Vigo in 2015, he’s scored more than 100 league goals for the club.

Mikel Oyarzabal – Unlike most of the players on this list, Oyarzabal predominantly plays on the left-wing instead of upfront.

However, the Real Sociedad attacker still scores plenty of goals. He scored 11 league goals last season and looks destined to surpass that tally this season after a strong start to the season.
