With college football returning for another exciting season, it’s time to take part in the age-old tradition that many bettors love and adore: making predictions.

This time, our core focus will be on the Big 12. Like many of the Power 5 Conferences, there isn’t a runaway favorite in this conference.

TCU, the team that was on the verge of national glory, will be one of the favorites in the conference, though Coach Sonny Dykes will have to reshuffle after losing many vital stars who were influential in the team’s ’22 run.

This makes Texas the top favorite in many sportsbooks, with the likes of Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Baylor ensuring that we’re in for an intriguing season.

With all that in mind, let’s see who the bookies think will dominate Big 12 proceedings this time round.

2023 Big 12 Conference Football Betting Odds Reports

On many betting sites and forums, Texas is the Big 12’s top favorite over TCU.

While the Horned Frogs will have to do without many star players who took the team to the National Championship game, the Texas Longhorns look like a well-oiled machine.

Aside from these two teams, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State are among the conference’s top 5 teams and will all be hoping to make the playoffs.

Plus, the addition of four newcomers — BYU, UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati — adds to the excitement and uncertainty.

Here’s a preview of what you can expect from the Big 12’s top teams:

The Favorites

Texas

SEC-bound Texas look set to dominate the conference in what could be their final year in the Big 12 if both Texas and Oklahoma are allowed to leave before 2025.

That aside, there are many reasons to back Texas this season. For starters, Steve Sarkisian seems like the perfect fit for the Longhorns project.

In his second season in charge, he improved the team’s win total by three and has been a key figure in the squad’s recruitment.

And unlike TCU, Texas doesn’t have to worry about having to deal with many departures.

Apart from RB Bijan Robinson, who left for the NFL draft, every other star player is still available.

At QB, Quinn Ewers could cement his starting spot, but five-star recruit Arch Manning may be ready to show the world that he’s not just capitalizing on his name.

Whoever gets the nod at QB will have plenty of receivers to pick out, including Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and AD Mitchell.

Besides being conference favorites, Texas is priced at +2200 to win the College Football National Championship Title.

TCU

Despite losing the 2023 National Championship Game and the Big 12 championship game, there’s no denying that TCU had an unbelievable season.

They were the standout team in the conference, ending the regular season with a 9-0 unbeaten conference mark and an overall 13-2 record.

Sure, their two losses came in the biggest games, but it’s the overall consistency that would have pleased head coach Sonny Dykes in his first year.

With many stars leaving for the big leagues, Dykes will have to work his magic again and find suitable replacements for the QB, RB, and receiver roles.

They are the second favorites in the Big 12 after Texas. When it comes to winning the National Championship Game, the bookies have the Horned Frogs priced at +6000.

Kansas State

Apart from the Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas State was the only other team to beat TCU during the 2022-23 season.

That win was a crucial one, coming in the Big 12 championship game. This was after the Kansas State Wildcats finished in 2nd place in the Big 12 with an impressive 7-2 conference mark.

Coach Chris Klieman has a few holes that he’ll have to fill if he wants to replicate last season’s success, with the most notable one being the absence of RB Deuce Vaughn, who’s already declared for the 2023 NFL draft.

Kansas State’s defense was also impressive, conceding an average of 21.9 points per game.

This will be another area for Klieman to patch with the departures of Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Julius Brents.

If you think that Kansas State will better last year’s Big 12 Championship title and make it to the National Championship game, you can get them at +10000 to win the national title.

The Contenders

Oklahoma

Just like Texas, Oklahoma is bound for the SEC, and if the program gets its way to make the switch before 2025, this could probably be the Sooners’ last season in the Big 12.

For now, the main focus for Oklahoma won’t be the potential switch but on improving on last season’s results.

They finished in 8th place in the Big 12, with a losing 3-6 conference mark and an overall 6-7 record.

As this was Brent Venables first season in charge, more is expected from the team this year. Star QB Dillon Gabriel isn’t going anywhere, which should be a boost for the whole team.

They are one the favorites in the Big 12, and their National Championship odds are at +5000.

Texas Tech

Texas Tech ended the 2022 season with an 8-5 record and a 5-4 mark in conference play, impressively winning their last four games of the season, even beating Ole Miss 42-25 in the Texas Bowl.

Coach Joey McGuire will hope to start the 2023 season with such form, and more is expected from him after a decent debut season in charge of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders have enough talent at QB, with healthy competition between Tyler Shough and Behren Morton.

The main concern will be the defense, which has been a weak point for years.

If they can strengthen at the back, they could be in contention for the conference title game. Who knows, maybe a shot at the national title (+10000) could be within the Raiders’ reach.

Baylor

Baylor seemed untouchable after winning the Big 12 title during the 2021 season.

Last season, however, was a different story. They finished 6th in 2022 in Big 12 play, with a 4-5 conference mark and an overall 6-7 record.

Compared to the 7-2 and 12-2 records that the Bears achieved in 2021, this was way below expectations.

With a defense that will likely be transitioning this year, the offense will need to be at full strength to catapult the team early on.

A shot at the Big 12 title may be slightly possible, but it’s fair to say that with odds of +15000 to win the 2024 National Championship, it’s unlikely that Baylor is going to be challenging the Georgia Bulldogs anytime soon.

UCF

We end our preview with one of the new teams.

Out of the four new additions, UCF is the strongest of them all.

With a great mix of returning players and some new fresh talent to add to the squad, head coach Gus Malzahn’s team will be ready to ruffle the feathers of the Big 12’s big boys.

The UCF Knights football team scored second place in the American Athletic Conference with a 6-2 conference record and a 9-5 overall record, earning them progress to the title game.

They eventually lost the American Athletic Conference Football Championship Game 45-28 to Tulane.

If you want to back the Knights to win the 2024 National Championship, you can get them at +30000.
