While other Power 5 conferences have a lot of competition to contend with, the SEC is one of the more straightforward ones.
Georgia is expected to dominate SEC proceedings, just like the Bulldogs have in the past few years.
Still, this doesn’t mean that the conference won’t have any additional intrigue.
The West Division is always a tight one to call, with LSU and Alabama set to duke it out once more this season.
Plus, who’s to say that Georgia has already won the East Division? This is football, after all, and anything can happen on game day.
With that in mind, we’ll be previewing the SEC’s top teams and show you which teams are worth backing this season.
2023 SEC Football Betting Odds Reports
The Georgia Bulldogs aren’t just Southeastern Conference favorites, but they are the favorites to win the entire thing and complete a historic three-peat.
Georgia’s closest challenger in the East is Tennessee, while South Carolina and Kentucky are worth keeping an eye on.
The West is bound to be the more competitive division, with Alabama hoping to return to the top of the standings after missing out on the top spot, thanks to LSU, which in turn made the Crimson Tide miss out on the playoffs for only the second time in nine years.
Plus, with Texas and Oklahoma set to join the SEC by 2025 (it could be even earlier if both programs get their way), this could be the perfect time for a team in the conference to step out of Georgia’s shadows.
Now, let’s see what the top teams in the conference have to offer this season.
The Favorites
Georgia
Georgia’s sights are set on a historic, unprecedented three-peat.
After emerging as National Champions in the last two seasons, the Bulldogs look set to dominate the SEC once more and are the bookies’ favorites to win the 2024 National Championship.
Last season, the Bulldogs were quite literally in a different league. They notched an 8-0 SEC record, 15-0 overall, and destroyed the TCU Horned Frogs in a 65-7 blowout victory in the title game itself.
Coach Kirby Smart may have to maneuver the prospect without a wealth of talent, as they are set to lose players like Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo, Stetson Bennett, and Kenny McIntosh, with all set to declare for the NFL draft.
Still, such a loss is always expected for a high-level program, and you can bet that the Bulldogs have more than enough replacements.
If you think the team is well equipped to achieve the three-peat, you can back the Bulldogs to win the 2024 National Championship at odds of +260.
Tennessee
No. 6 ranked Tennessee is probably the only side in the East that could rival this bulldozing Georgia Bulldogs side.
The Volunteers finished the 2022 season with an overall 11-2 record, with a 6-2 SEC mark.
The major worry for Tennessee in 2023 will be the departing players. Alongside Cedric Tillman and Jalin Hyatt, two wide receivers, QB Hendon Hooker also won’t be returning.
However, some replacements are already in place, with Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, and Joe Milton already tapped to fill in the massive shoes.
This will be Josh Heupel’s third year in charge of the Volunteers, and it could be the season that Tennessee breaks free from Georgia’s grip.
They are second favorites to win the East Division after Georgia and are priced at +2200 to win the National Championship.
Alabama
Despite missing the playoffs for only the second time in nine years, Alabama is still a strong contender in the college football world.
The Crimson Tide finished joint second in the West Division and narrowly missed out on the SEC title game, with both teams scoring an overall 11-2 record and a 6-2 conference mark.
Alabama’s biggest loss — arguably the biggest in college football this season — will be Bryce Young leaving for the NFL. The star quarterback was instrumental for the Tide, particularly in 2021, and ended up with the Heisman trophy that year for all of his talented efforts.
Defensive coordinator Pete Golding also won’t be with the Crimson Tide after he left for Ole Miss, but Nick Saban will be back coaching the team in his 17th season with Alabama.
Despite such losses, we think that Alabama will manage to avenge its loss to LSU and top the West division, and the team should bounce back and make the playoffs.
Nick Saban has led the team to the National Championship multiple times before, and if you think that he can do it again, you can back Alabama at +500.
The Contenders
LSU
Last season’s surprise package, the LSU Tigers managed to beat Alabama in the SEC West and were rewarded with the SEC Championship Game in ’22, where they were unlucky to meet a Georgia side that destroys everything in its path.
Overall, the team had an 11-2 record and a 6-2 record in SEC play, which was enough to earn them the SEC Western Division co-champion.
This will be Brian Kelly’s second season with the Tigers, and most of the players are set to return, meaning they may even be stronger than last season.
They are the second favorites for the SEC Western Division behind Alabama and have odds of +1800 to win the National Championship title.
South Carolina
No. 23-ranked South Carolina finished with an 8-5 record and a 4-4 record in SEC play in 2022, which was an improvement on their 7-6, 3-5 record in 2021.
Like previous offseasons, the Gamecocks have recruited well, with Dowell Loggains joining as offensive coordinator to help Shane Beamer in his third coaching season at the program.
Plus, retaining talents like Spencer Rattler (QB) and Juice Wells (WR) means that Beamer won’t be worried about searching for next-gen superstars.
While we don’t think that SC has a chance of dethroning Georgia or challenging Tennessee in the Eastern Division, they should be well-equipped to make it into the top 25, just as they did in 2022.
Nationally, their odds of winning the 2024 National Championship are on the higher side, averaging odds of +10000 on most sportsbooks.
Kentucky
Kentucky finished with a 3-5 and 7-6 record in 2022, with the standout highlight of the team being the average points that they conceded.
With a mean defense that gave away an average of 19.2 points per game, the Wildcats finished the season as the no. 3 defense in America.
If the team can perform defensively like they did last season, who’s to say that a top 3 spot in the division isn’t out of the question?
Mississippi State
Lastly, we have Mississippi State, a team that finished joint third in SEC West after notching a 4-4 conf. record and 9-4 overall, but that were still enough to earn them the 20th spot in the top 25 rankings.
Zach Arnett replaces Mike Leach as head coach, but he already has a lot of experience with the team, having been the team’s defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022.
Nationally, Mississippi state is a long shot, with their average odds of winning the 2024 National Championship hovering around +15000.
