What Is NBA Team Totals Betting?

Traditionally, when it comes to TOTALS betting, also known as OVER/UNDER betting, we are trying to decide whether the combined score of a game will be higher or lower than the total set by the sportsbook.

TEAM TOTALS betting is just a slight variation of the traditional O/U betting we are already very familiar with. Instead of looking at the combined score, we are only focused on the total score for one of the teams playing.

If you are interested in betting on the NBA Team Total, you might enjoy betting on the NFL Team Total as well.

How Does NBA Team Totals Betting Work?

Sportsbooks will provide a TOTAL for OVER/UNDER betting purposes for every NBA game. This TOTAL is for the combined score of the two teams involved.

NBA bettors then have to decide if they think the final combined score of the game will be OVER or UNDER the TOTAL set by the operators.

Betting NBA TEAM TOTALS means that instead of a combined score, we only look at the score for one of the teams involved.

In order to set a GAME TOTAL, oddsmakers have to decide how many points each of the two individual teams will score. These are used to determine the individual TEAM TOTALS.

NBA Example Game: Miami Heat vs. LA Lakers

Game Total (O/U) | 221.5

Miami Heat Team Total | +112.5

LA Lakers Team Total | +109.5

In our example game above, we can see that the O/U for the entire game is +221.5.

Each of the two teams involved also have their own TOTAL set for the game.

In our example above, the Miami Heat TEAM TOTAL is set at +112.5, and the Los Angeles Lakers are at +109.5.

How Do NBA Team Total Odds Work?

When we analyze NBA TEAM TOTALS, there are two important numbers for a bettor.

TeamsTeam Total (O/U)Odds
Miami HeatOver +112.5-108
Under +112.5-114
LA LakersOver +109.5-116
Under +109.5-106

Looking at our odds table above, we can see the TEAM TOTALS set for both the Heat and the Lakers. Obviously, the TOTAL set for each team is the key information a bettor will need to focus on.

However, it is also important that we pay attention to the MONEYLINE that is associated with each possible wager.

When we are looking at the TEAM TOTAL for the Heat, we can see that the ML odds are telling us UNDER +112.5 is the betting favorite of the two options.

Looking at the TEAM TOTAL for the Lakers, the odds are telling us the OVER +109.5 is the favorite.

It’s not enough to pay attention only to the TOTAL. As a bettor, you have to understand the odds involved.

You won’t be profitable if you win 54% of your bets but only play favorites at -115 odds or lower.

But winning at a 54% rate and playing only odds of -105 or better would be very profitable.

You will also notice that TEAM TOTALS are almost always set with half-points, trying to avoid as many push (tied) bets as possible.

Using The BestOdds.com NBA Team Total BettingTable

Many NBA bettors love to focus on TEAM TOTALS because they have a good understanding of how one team will perform and find it easier to handicap just one team as opposed to both.

If you are thinking about betting on NBA TEAM TOTALS, then make sure to have BestOdds.com bookmarked throughout the season.

After each night of NBA action, BestOdds.com will update its TEAM TOTALS standings page.

A bettor can quickly see how a specific team has performed with their TEAM TOTAL wagers for the entire season to date.

NBA Team Total Betting Strategies

Using Player Prop Totals

NBA O/U and TEAM TOTALS betting is all about understanding matchups between the two teams involved.

This can be difficult for the average fan. Only some have the knowledge and passion for understanding how each team rotates and switches defensively, double-team opposition star players, and other key strategies teams use to play defense.

One team might give up a lot of points when Ja Morant comes to town because they don’t have the guards capable of playing elite defense against the Grizzlies best player.

However, that same team might not be as vulnerable when Giannis and his Milwaukee Bucks come to town because they have the size and bodies capable of playing elite defense against the Milwaukee Big Man.

This is where researching some player prop betting totals can help with TEAM TOTAL betting.

If Ja Morant is averaging 22 points a game, and his O/U for that night is 26.5 points, then right away, we learn the sportsbooks believe Morant will have a better-than-average scoring night.

We can use this information to help us decide if we like the Grizzlies TEAM TOTAL to go Over or Under the number.

If there is a chance that Morant is going to have a huge game and score 35+ points, we might want to lean OVER.

Shop Around

For a lot of sports bettors, watching games unfold is only a part of the entertainment package sports betting can provide.

Many of us enjoy the stats and data involved with betting on sports. The ability to pour through large amounts of information to find an edge against the sportsbooks.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. LA Clippers

TeamsDraftKingsFanDuelBetMGM
Milwaukee Over104.5 | -115104.5 | -110105.5 | -110
Milwaukee Under104.5 | -105104.5 | -110105.5 | -110
LA Clippers Over105.5 | -112105.5 | -115106.5 | -115
LA Cippers Under105.5 | -108105.5 | -105106.5 | -105

The single greatest advantage we have against the sportsbooks, is the ability to shop around and find the Best Odds for the bets we are playing that day.

Even if shopping around only finds an edge that is a 5 or 10% advantage, that difference in potential ROI will be significant over time.

If one of your betting goals is chasing profitability against the sportsbooks, shopping around to play only the Best Odds could be the difference you need to achieve profitability.
