Scottie Scheffler Wins Olympic Gold, Expanding On Wild Year
Scottie Scheffler’s wild 2024 continues to be one of the most unpredictable in the history of professional golf.
From winning majors and contending in nearly every tournament he enters — to shockingly being arrested at the PGA Championship in Louisville — 2024 will be unforgettable for Scheffler.
On Sunday, Scheffler delivered what may be considered one of the best performances of his career. He rallied from four shots behind with a 9-under 62 to win the Olympic gold medal in men’s golf at Le Golf National.
Already a six-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, including his second Masters title, Scheffler added Olympic gold to his astonishing season with a thrilling round that kept some 30,000 fans on edge during the final two hours in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.
Starting the final round four shots behind and trailing by six early on the back nine, Scheffler birdied five of six holes down the stretch, matching the course record with a 9-under 62, culminating in a one-shot victory over Tommy Fleetwood.
To secure the gold on Sunday, Scheffler needed a massive final round to become the first World No. 1 to win the Olympics men’s golf event. Starting four shots behind the overnight leaders, Jon Rahm of Spain and Tommy Fleetwood of England, Scheffler delivered an impressive back-nine performance, shooting a 29 (6-under) that featured four consecutive birdies from holes 14 to 17.
Scheffler’s 72-hole total of 265 broke the previous Olympic record of 266 set by Xander Schauffele in the 2021 Tokyo games.
In 2024, Scheffler has now added Olympic champion to his wins at The Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, The RBC Heritage, The Memorial Tournament, and the Travelers Championship.
Aside from the wins, Scheffler has also finished top 10 at The Open Championship (T7), The Charles Schwab Challenge (T2), The PGA Championship (T8), The Houston Open (T2), The Genesis Invitational (T10), The Waste Management Open (T3), The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (T6), and The Sentry (T5).
What is the FedEx Cup?
The 2024 PGA Tour season comprises 36 regular-season events, followed by a three-event playoff series that concludes with the Tour Championship from August 29 to September 1. At the end of the tour championship, the points leader hoists the FedEx Cup Trophy and is crowned the winner of the PGA Tour season.
Winners of standard regular-season events earn 500 FedEx Cup points, while points are also awarded to players making the cut.
Winners of the tour’s eight signature events receive 700 points. The four major tournaments and The Players Championship grant 750 points to the champion, and events held concurrently with majors or signature events award 300 points to the winner.
After the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, the top 50 players will secure spots in the second playoff event, the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, which will determine the top 30 players who will advance to the Tour Championship.
These players will then compete for the coveted first-place FedEx Cup prize of $25 million, part of a $100 million overall bonus pool.
