There is little that fuels the passion of the masses in India like cricket.

It is the country’s number one sport and a borderline obsession.

Recent times have seen new cricketing crazes such as the IPL ramp up the interest to even greater heights and online sportsbooks have played a large part in this as well.

Eighty percent of all sports bets in India are placed on cricket markets and it is now easier than ever to get in on the action yourself.

Here, we will look at one of the most popular cricket markets: total runs scored.

Total Runs Betting Odds Explained

As everyone knows, the essence of cricket is not necessarily team versus team, it’s bat versus ball. When the ball wins, wickets fall.

However, when the bat wins, runs are scored.

Nobody is winning anything without those runs, so runs-related betting is an obvious cornerstone of cricket apps betting.

Obviously, in total runs betting the best teams and the best players will be expected to post the biggest totals.

This means you can’t expect overly generous odds of it happening.

That said, if you can see a big surprise coming – such as a top-order collapse or an inspired middle-order domination of the bowling on a flat pitch by a weaker team – then you could find some serious value in the odds.

How it works is very simple.

The sportsbook will give you a hypothetical total and you will decide whether you think the team, teams, or player will score fewer (under) or more (over) runs than their projection.

Total Runs Betting Market Overview

Total runs scored is a favourite market among cricket bettors, largely because it uses the under/over system that works so successfully with other sports.

It can also be split into three different sub-markets as well. These are:

  • Total runs scored – The total number of runs that were scored in the match when both teams’ innings are added together.
  • Team total runs – The total that one team scores in the match or an innings.
  • Total player runs – The number of runs an individual batter scores during the match.

There are one or two related runs markets that you might want to check out as well.

For the top players, there will be markets on whether they will score a 50 or 100, for example.

Total Runs Betting Rules

If you are going to try your hand at total runs betting in cricket, then there are a few things you should know.

Let’s take a look at the most important.

Fear The Follow-on

The follow-on is a rule in Test match cricket that can reduce the number of innings required for a result from four to three.

Should the team batting second fail to post a total within 200 of their opponents’ first innings score, they can be forced to bat again immediately.

Should that happen, the number of runs scored in a match will be affected too as there could be up to 10 batters who only take to the crease once during the match instead of twice.

Overs Reduction Can Void Bets

If the match is a limited overs one, for example, an ODI, often the number of overs to be bowled can be reduced if there is a rain stoppage or any other kind of delay.

Bets on innings runs and match runs in limited overs matches will be void if there is any reduction of overs unless the result has already been determined.

More Lenient T20 Rules

As mentioned above, totals bets in limited overs matches will be void if there is any reduction in overs, but there is a small exception for T20 cricket.

In Twenty20, such as the IPL, all unsettled totals bets will be void if the reduction is by three or more overs (unless the result has already been determined).

This means there is a little more leeway there than in other forms of limited overs cricket.

Total Runs Betting Strategy

If you want to master the total runs markets in cricket betting then you are going to need a strategy.

Here are some you may want to consider.

Learn The Different Formats

While many who don’t know the game may think all forms of cricket are essentially the same, the truth is that the game differs considerably between the various formats.

Those differences will have a significant effect on how many runs you should expect to be scored.

For example, a total of 500 in Test match cricket is not uncommon, but it is completely unrealistic in ODIs and practically impossible in T20.

So, make sure your bets are tuned to the format.

Think Hard About Backing The Middle Order

Oftentimes, the middle order contains the most flamboyant big-hitting batters in the line-up and it can be tempting to back them for big scores.

However, in limited overs matches, and in particular T20, if the top order has done their job, then those players may not get much time at the crease or even none at all.

This would impact their ability to score heavily.

Additionally, it is the top-order batsmen who generally play during the powerplays in limited overs matches, which is when the boundaries are most poorly defended.

Study The Pitch

The pitch always plays a big role in cricket matches because it determines how the ball comes onto the bat.

Slow flat pitches with an even bounce will be a batter’s paradise and large scores will therefore be more likely.

However, if the pitch is conducive to swing bowling or prone to an uneven bounce, it will favour the bowler, and scoring runs will be very difficult.

You shouldn’t be rushing to place any bets on the total runs markets until you know what kind of pitch the match will be played on.
