What Is A Prop Bet?

The term prop bet is short for proposition bet in most betting circles.

As the name suggests, prop bets will focus on unique happenings in a game.

Rather than placing a wager on the moneyline, the point spread, or the over/under total which are all focused on the general outcome of a game, prop bets are centered around a player or an individual team’s stats or achievements.

For example, you can choose to bet on how many goals a player will score in a hockey game.

There are even prop bets that have nothing to do with the game at all.

These are called novelty props, which I will dive into later in this guide.

Player Props

Player props are wagers that are focused on an individual player’s statistical performance like popular NBA player props or NFL player props.

To cash a player prop ticket, said player must reach a certain stat line in the game.

Below, I will list a few examples of player props you will find at Betfred:

• Kyrie Irving to record Over 7.5 assists (-105)
• Amari Cooper to score a touchdown (+170)
• Mike Trout to record over 1.5 total bases (-140)

For those player props to cash, Irving must dish out eight assists, Cooper must score, and Trout must record at least two total bases.

As you can see, those player statistical outcomes have nothing to do with the overall result of the game.

Team Props

Like player props, team props have nothing to do with the outcome of the game.

Instead, they are focused on an individual team’s stats and performances in a contest.

Some team props will include how many points a team will score in a half or a team to win the race to 15.

Here are some more examples of team props at Betfred:

• Dallas Cowboys to score Over 2.5 touchdowns in a game (-110)
• The Portland Trailblazers will score Over 21.5 points in the first quarter (-115)
• Liverpool to score the last goal in a match (-260)

For these team props to be graded as winners, the Cowboys must score at least three touchdowns, the Blazers must score at least 22 points in the first and Liverpool must be the last team to score.

Game Props

Game props are wagers that are centered around in-game stats and happenings rather than the overall outcome.

Some game props you will find at Betfred will include the final score prediction in a hockey game or when a team will call their first time out.

Here are some more examples of game props you will find at Betfred:

• The number of corners in a soccer match
• How many field goals a team will record in a football game
• Will the game go into overtime?

Novelty Props

Novelty props are also referred to as exotic props in many betting circles.

Like its name, novelty props are meant to be fun wagers centered around occurrences surrounding a big game or an event.

You will normally find novelty props attached to the Super Bowl, March Madness, or an upcoming election.

Here are some examples of novelty props:

• How many times will the broadcast team mention a current event?
• The length of the National Anthem
• The political party of the election winner

Stay Away From Novelty Props

Novelty props are meant to be fun. However, they are not meant to be profitable since they are primarily luck-based.

Because novelty props are based on luck, it is hard to gauge how they will turn out. You are more or less taking a shot in the dark.

You won’t be a profitable sports bettor by focusing your bets on these types of wagers.

When wagering on novelty props, limit yourself and bet responsibly.

Line-Shopping

You never want to leave money on the table, which is why line shopping in between sportsbooks is imperative with any type of bet, especially props.

With line shopping, you can find a prop that you like and look at several sportsbooks to see who is providing the best lines and odds.

If DraftKings is offering Ezekiel Elliott to score a touchdown at (-120) odds but Betfred has the same bet at (+100) odds, then the smart thing to do is place the bet at Betfred.

If you weren’t line shopping, then you would never know that Betfred was offering the same bet at plus odds.

Do Your Homework

We can research all of our sports bets right at our fingertips on any device and on the go if we wanted to. So why wouldn’t we utilize the technology at hand?

Sportsbooks already have an edge, researching our bets gives us the chance to even the odds.
