NBA offseason: free agency and trade market

The NBA offseason continues to produce headlines as teams reshape their rosters through free agency, trades and contract extensions. While several of the biggest names have already found new homes, numerous storylines remain unresolved, including LeBron James’ future, Kawhi Leonard’s pending trade to Toronto, contract negotiations for several young stars, and continued discussion surrounding NBA expansion.

Front offices have taken an aggressive approach following the opening of free agency, with contenders looking to bolster championship rosters while rebuilding clubs position themselves for the future.

Several blockbuster trades have already altered the balance of power in both conferences, but league executives expect additional movement before training camps open this fall. Beyond the teams involved, offseason moves could have a huge impact on NBA betting.

Major Free Agent Signings and Trades

Some of the biggest moves of the offseason include:

  • Philadelphia 76ers acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in one of the summer’s biggest blockbuster trades.
  • Toronto Raptors agreed to acquire Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers, although the deal remains on hold while the NBA reviews salary-cap related matters.
  • Cleveland Cavaliers signed Donovan Mitchell to a new maximum contract extension, keeping one of the league’s premier scorers in Cleveland long term.
  • Los Angeles Lakers acquired center Walker Kessler, strengthening one of the NBA’s thinnest frontcourts.
  • Charlotte Hornets landed veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith in a trade with the Houston Rockets.

Top Free Agents Still Available

Several notable players remain unsigned as teams continue evaluating salary-cap flexibility and roster needs.

  • LeBron James — 2025-26: 24.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 8.1 assists per game. James remains the biggest name on the market, with multiple contenders reportedly monitoring his decision.
  • Josh Giddey — 2025-26: 17.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists per game. The versatile guard remains one of the top younger free agents available.
  • Jonathan Kuminga — 2025-26: 18.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Several teams have expressed interest in the athletic forward.
  • Cam Thomas — 2025-26: 23.2 points per game. One of the league’s best available scorers continues to draw interest around the NBA.
  • Quentin Grimes — 2025-26: 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. A quality two-way wing who could help several playoff hopefuls.

Several restricted free agents also remain in negotiations with their current clubs, while teams continue exploring sign-and-trade possibilities before training camp.

Expansion and Other Storylines

Beyond player movement, the league continues evaluating future expansion. Seattle and Las Vegas remain the leading candidates for new franchises, although league officials have not finalized a timetable for adding teams.

Expansion discussions remain one of the NBA’s biggest long-term offseason topics. League executives are also monitoring several unresolved contract situations involving young stars, while the Kawhi Leonard trade and LeBron James’ next destination remain among the offseason’s biggest unanswered questions.

Betting Outlook

Sportsbooks like DraftKings and BetMGM continue adjusting championship futures as rosters take shape. Oklahoma City remains the consensus favorite entering the 2026-27 season, while Philadelphia has climbed significantly following the acquisition of Jaylen Brown.

Cleveland also strengthened its outlook by retaining Donovan Mitchell, and the Lakers could see their odds improve further depending on additional offseason moves.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard is expected to keep futures markets in flux until those situations are resolved. Bettors should expect championship odds to continue moving throughout the remainder of free agency as additional trades and signings are completed.
