The New England Patriots enter 2026 attempting to prove last season’s remarkable turnaround was the beginning of another extended run near the top of the AFC. New England finished 14-3 in 2025, won the AFC East and advanced through the playoffs before falling to Seattle in Super Bowl LX. Quarterback Drake Maye emerged as one of the NFL’s elite young players, throwing for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns during the regular season.
The rematch with Seattle opened the 2026 season Wednesday night, and the Patriots again came up short. Seattle defeated New England 13-10, dropping the defending AFC champions to 0-1. The Patriots now get an extended break before hosting Pittsburgh on Sept. 20.
What to Watch
Maye remains the centerpiece of Mike Vrabel’s team, but New England gave him a major new weapon by acquiring A.J. Brown from Philadelphia. Brown produced his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season in 2025 and should immediately become Maye’s primary outside target. The Patriots also added receiver Romeo Doubs, while Hunter Henry returns at tight end. The offensive line received attention as well. First-round pick Caleb Lomu, selected No. 28 overall out of Utah, gives New England another young tackle to develop alongside Will Campbell. Defensively, Christian Gonzalez remains one of the team’s most important players, with Christian Barmore and Robert Spillane among the other veterans to watch. Second-round linebacker Gabe Jacas is another intriguing addition and recorded his first NFL sack in the opener at Seattle.Betting Outlook
Despite reaching the Super Bowl last season, New England entered 2026 behind Buffalo in the AFC East futures market. DraftKings listed the Patriots at +125 to win the AFC East, compared with Buffalo at -136. As of Sept. 1, New England was +870 to win the AFC and +1800 to win Super Bowl LXI. The Patriots’ win total was 10.5, with Over 10.5 at +115 and Under at -140. New England was also -225 to make the playoffs. Those futures were posted before Wednesday’s season-opening loss and can move throughout the season.Key Team Details
