NFL Week 1 Recap The Kansas City Chiefs closed the NFL’s opening week with an emphatic statement Monday night, beating the Denver Broncos 31-10 at Arrowhead Stadium while Patrick Mahomes successfully returned from the major knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while adding a 15-yard rushing touchdown. More importantly for Kansas City’s outlook, his surgically repaired left knee appeared to hold up well.

Walker Rolls, Nix Struggles

The night’s biggest offensive performance belonged to newcomer Kenneth Walker III. The former Seattle running back rushed 23 times for a career-high 173 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard third-quarter touchdown. Walker also caught a two-yard touchdown from Mahomes as Kansas City accumulated 392 yards and limited Denver to only 176. Denver quarterback Bo Nix finished with just 131 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception. The Broncos now face Jacksonville in Week 2, while Kansas City hosts Indianapolis.

Week 1 Injuries Could Affect Week 2 Lines

The opening week also produced several injuries that bettors will need to monitor before placing Week 2 wagers.
  • Kyler Murray, Vikings: Murray left Minnesota’s 39-22 win over Green Bay with a concussion. Carson Wentz replaced him and threw three touchdowns. Minnesota visits Chicago in Week 2, and the quarterback situation could have a significant effect on the market. Chicago is currently around a 5.5-point favorite.
  • Sam Darnold, Seahawks: The defending Super Bowl champions could be without Darnold against Arizona because of a hip injury. He is expected to miss Week 2. Seattle is still around a 4.5-point road favorite, making Drew Lock’s expected presence an important consideration for bettors.
  • Henry To’oTo’o, Texans: Houston’s linebacker suffered a shoulder injury against Buffalo and is expected to miss time. That is another concern for an already depleted linebacker group ahead of a Week 2 home game against Cincinnati. Houston is currently favored by roughly three points.
  • Marvin Mims Jr., Broncos: Mims exited Monday night’s loss with a hip injury. His status becomes particularly important with Denver facing Jacksonville and trying to rebound from an offense that managed only 176 yards against Kansas City.

Betting Impact Heading Into Week 2

Kansas City’s performance produced one of the clearest betting takeaways from Monday. The Chiefs closed as roughly 2.5-point favorites against Denver and covered easily, while the 41 combined points stayed below a total around 43-43.5. Sportsbooks like FanDuel and bet365 now have Kansas City around -6.5 against Indianapolis, while Denver is approximately -2.5 against Jacksonville. Other notable early Week 2 numbers include Buffalo -4.5 against Detroit, Philadelphia -7 at Tennessee and San Francisco -13.5 against Miami.

Key Injuries to Watch

Injuries may create the greatest uncertainty in Minnesota-Chicago and Seattle-Arizona. Quarterbacks have an outsized effect on NFL point spreads and totals, so Murray and Darnold’s availability could produce additional movement as injury reports become clearer later in the week. Kansas City, meanwhile, leaves Week 1 with fewer questions than it entered with. Mahomes looked mobile, Walker immediately transformed the running game and the defense dominated Denver. Those developments could influence not only Week 2 markets but also the Chiefs’ AFC and Super Bowl futures.
