NFL Draft Grades: Early Impressions Highlight Strong Starts for Top First-Round Classes
With offseason workouts underway across the league and training camps starting July, the first wave of evaluations for the 2026 NFL Draft class is taking shape.
While rookies have yet to play an NFL snap, analysts are already identifying the teams that appear to have landed the biggest impact players based on roster fit, value, and long-term upside.
ESPN’s early review of the first round praised several organizations for addressing major roster needs while selecting players capable of contributing immediately. Quarterbacks once again dominated the top of the draft, but several offensive and defensive playmakers also generated significant buzz following minicamps and organized team activities.
Top Teams Receiving High Marks
Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders made perhaps the franchise’s most important selection in years by drafting quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick. Las Vegas believes Mendoza can become the long-term answer under center and build around an improved supporting cast.
New York Jets
The Jets strengthened one of the league’s most talented defenses by selecting edge rusher David Bailey. His pass-rushing ability gives New York another disruptive presence and could help transform an already aggressive front seven.
Arizona Cardinals
Arizona addressed one of its biggest offensive needs with running back Jeremiyah Love. The explosive playmaker should immediately upgrade the Cardinals’ rushing attack while providing another weapon for the offense.
Tennessee Titans
Carnell Tate stood out early with sharp route running and reliable hands, including three OTA touchdowns in media-viewed practices. Teammates have praised his polish and believe he could quickly become an exciting rookie contributor.New York Giants
The Giants continued added to their defense with linebacker Arvell Reese, whose speed and versatility impressed evaluators throughout the draft process. He projects as an every-down defender with significant upside.
Chicago Bears
Chicago earned praise for selecting safety Dillon Thieneman, one of the draft’s top defensive backs. The Bears believe he can anchor their secondary for years while providing leadership and playmaking ability.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas focused on strengthening its offensive line and overall roster depth, selecting players expected to contribute quickly while protecting its veteran core.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns continued investing in the trenches by adding offensive tackle Spencer Fano. ESPN analysts viewed the selection as one of the better value picks of the opening round, giving Cleveland another cornerstone piece along the offensive line.
Los Angeles Rams
Despite having limited draft capital in recent years, the Rams again found value in the first round by selecting quarterback Ty Simpson, who will have an opportunity to develop behind veteran Matthew Stafford.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh emphasized toughness and versatility with another physical first-round addition, reinforcing a defense that remains central to the team’s identity.
Green Bay Packers
Green Bay continued building around one of the NFL’s youngest rosters, selecting another athletic prospect capable of contributing on both offense and special teams while fitting the organization’s long-term philosophy.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins addressed multiple future needs after entering the draft with one of the league’s largest collections of selections. Their first-round choice added another premium athlete to an already explosive roster.
Seattle Seahawks
Seattle rounded out the list of early winners by adding another impact defender, giving head coach Mike Macdonald additional flexibility on one of the NFL’s rising defenses.
Betting Outlook
Sportsbooks often react quickly to highly regarded draft classes, particularly when teams select franchise quarterbacks or immediate-impact players. Las Vegas, Chicago and Arizona all saw modest improvements in their NFL betting playoff and division odds following the draft, while the Raiders’ long-term outlook improved significantly after selecting Mendoza first overall.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year futures betting also shifted dramatically. Fernando Mendoza opened among the favorites, while Jeremiyah Love and several first-round wide receivers also generated substantial betting interest. Bettors will continue monitoring preseason performances and training camp reports, as those markets typically experience significant movement before Week 1.
Although draft grades often change once players take the field, several franchises appear to have laid strong foundations for the future.
