Flutter Faces Leadership Change as FanDuel Parent Navigates Slowing U.S. Sports Betting Growth

FanDuel CEO stepping down Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of FanDuel, is entering a new chapter after announcing that longtime CEO Peter Jackson will step down later this year. The leadership transition comes as the global gaming company lowered its financial outlook following a challenging second quarter, reflecting slower growth in its U.S. sports betting business and increased investment aimed at strengthening its long-term position. Dan Taylor, currently Flutter’s president and CEO of its international division, will succeed Jackson as group CEO on Oct. 1. Jackson, who has led Flutter since 2018, will remain with the company in an advisory role through the end of the year to assist with the transition. During his tenure, Flutter transformed from a primarily U.K.-focused sportsbook into the world’s largest online sports betting and online casino gaming company, largely through the growth of FanDuel in the United States and a series of international acquisitions.

U.S. Sports Betting Business Faces Pressure

The announcement accompanied second-quarter earnings that highlighted the challenges facing Flutter’s U.S. business. Company officials said sportsbook revenue declined as customer-friendly sports results, slower market growth and elevated customer churn weighed on performance. Flutter reported a quarterly net loss of $296 million compared to a profit during the same period last year, while average monthly players also declined. Although total revenue increased modestly year over year, management reduced its full-year revenue and earnings guidance.

FanDuel Investment Remains a Priority

Much of Flutter’s recent strategy has centered on protecting FanDuel’s leadership position in an increasingly competitive U.S. market. Executives said the company plans to continue investing in customer acquisition, promotions, loyalty programs and product improvements, even if those investments reduce short-term profitability. The company believes those efforts will better position FanDuel for sustained long-term growth as competition intensifies.

Prediction Markets Add Another Challenge

Another emerging challenge is the rapid rise of sports prediction markets. Companies offering event contracts on sporting events have attracted increasing attention from bettors and investors, prompting traditional sportsbook operators to explore new products while continuing to advocate for regulated sports betting frameworks. Flutter has acknowledged the growing importance of this market and has begun expanding its own offerings while continuing to invest in FanDuel’s core sportsbook platform.

International Business Provides Support

Despite the softer U.S. results, Flutter reported stronger performance internationally. The company cited double-digit international revenue growth and particularly strong customer engagement during the FIFA World Cup, helping offset some of the weakness in North America. Dan Taylor’s experience leading Flutter’s international operations is viewed as one reason the board selected him to lead the company into its next phase.

Investors React to Earnings and CEO Change

Investors reacted negatively to the earnings announcement and leadership change, sending Flutter shares sharply lower following the report. Analysts noted that while FanDuel remains the market leader in U.S. online sports betting, the company now faces a more competitive environment than at any point since nationwide legalization began following the repeal of PASPA in 2018. Looking ahead, Flutter’s performance during the upcoming NFL season will likely be closely watched by both investors and industry analysts. The fall football calendar traditionally represents the busiest period for U.S. sportsbooks, making it an important opportunity for the company to demonstrate whether its increased investments can translate into stronger customer growth and improved financial performance under new leadership.
