NFL Exploring Thanksgiving Eve Game Could Expand Betting & TV Reach

The NFL is once again exploring ways to expand the league’s already-dominant presence on the sports calendar, with league officials discussing the possibility of adding a standalone game the night before Thanksgiving
The plan could be implemented as soon as this season, according to ESPN, and would further extend one of the league’s most-watched stretches of the year. The extra televised game could also create another high-profile broadcast window for networks and streaming partners.
The addition of a Wednesday night game before Thanksgiving would create a nine-day span featuring NFL games on seven different days, effectively turning the holiday into a near week-long football showcase. The move would build on the NFL’s continued success in expanding its schedule beyond traditional Sundays.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has emphasized the league’s ongoing efforts to evolve its schedule to meet fan demand.
“Every offseason we look for new opportunities to best serve our fans,” Goodell said.
The Thanksgiving Day tripleheader already serves as one of the league’s premier events, consistently delivering huge ratings. Recent holiday games have drawn tens of millions of viewers.
Impact on Betting and Media Rights
From an NFL betting perspective, a Thanksgiving eve game would likely generate significant wagering activity. Standalone NFL games already attract some of the highest betting handle of the week, and placing one on the eve of a major holiday could amplify that effect.
Bettors would have an additional marquee matchup to engage with, potentially extending betting across multiple consecutive days. The league’s sportsbook partners include Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel,
The proposal also aligns with the NFL’s broader strategy of maximizing media rights value. Each additional standalone game creates a new premium asset for networks and streaming platforms.
With recent deals for exclusive games reaching significant financial figures, a game the nigh before Thanksgiving could become another lucrative broadcast property.
What It Means Going Forward
Logistically, the NFL would need to adjust team schedules to accommodate the added game. One option under consideration is providing teams with a bye week before playing on Wednesday, ensuring adequate rest and preparation for the short week.
With games potentially spanning from Wednesday through the weekend, the league would control nearly every major viewing window during one of the busiest travel and entertainment periods of the year.
While still under discussion, the proposal highlights the NFL’s continued push to expand its reach, increase revenue, and deepen fan engagement.
For viewers, networks, and bettors alike, Thanksgiving week could soon become an even bigger centerpiece of the football calendar.
