What Is NBA Team Totals Betting?

Traditionally, when it comes to TOTALS betting, also known as OVER/UNDER betting, we are trying to decide whether the combined score of a game will be higher or lower than the total set by the sportsbook.

TEAM TOTALS betting is just a slight variation of the traditional O/U betting we are already very familiar with. Instead of looking at the combined score, we are only focused on the total score for one of the teams playing.

If you are interested in betting on the NBA Team Total, you might enjoy betting on the NFL Team Total as well.

How Does NBA Team Totals Betting Work?

Sportsbooks will provide a TOTAL for OVER/UNDER betting purposes for every NBA game. This TOTAL is for the combined score of the two teams involved.

NBA bettors then have to decide if they think the final combined score of the game will be OVER or UNDER the TOTAL set by the operators.

Betting NBA TEAM TOTALS means that instead of a combined score, we only look at the score for one of the teams involved.

In order to set a GAME TOTAL, oddsmakers have to decide how many points each of the two individual teams will score. These are used to determine the individual TEAM TOTALS.

NBA Example Game: Miami Heat vs. LA Lakers

Game Total (O/U) | 221.5

Miami Heat Team Total | +112.5

LA Lakers Team Total | +109.5

In our example game above, we can see that the O/U for the entire game is +221.5.

Each of the two teams involved also have their own TOTAL set for the game.

In our example above, the Miami Heat TEAM TOTAL is set at +112.5, and the Los Angeles Lakers are at +109.5.

NBA Teams Totals Betting for 2026

Game totals betting is one of the most consistently profitable markets in the NBA for bettors who do the research, and that has everything to do with how reliably certain variables predict final scores.

NBA totals typically range from 210 to 240 points depending on the teams involved, and pace of play is the single most important factor in determining where within that range any given game is likely to land.

Teams playing above league-average pace create higher-scoring games, making pace the most predictive available statistic for over/under bets. Fast teams and high-scoring offenses can drive up totals due to their volume of possessions and three-point attempts, while slow, defensive teams create natural lean toward the under regardless of opponent.

The formula oddsmakers use is straightforward: expected points are calculated by combining each team’s pace and offensive efficiency. When two high-pace teams meet, totals trend toward overs. When slow, defensive teams clash, unders become valuable. The practical application for bettors is simple: before placing any game total, check both teams’ possessions per game ranking and offensive rating. The number that emerges from those two inputs will either validate or challenge the posted total.

Key Variables to Research Before Betting NBA Totals

Injuries affect more than just star players. Missing rotation pieces changes pace, defensive schemes, and scoring distribution, and considering how specific absences impact the betting angle is essential before committing to either side of a total. A backup point guard going down sounds minor until the team’s primary ball handler is suddenly playing 40 minutes and managing the clock differently in the fourth quarter.

Referee tendencies are another meaningfully underappreciated factor. Umpires with historically tight foul-calling tendencies increase free throw volume, extend possessions, and push combined scores higher. Officials with looser tendencies produce faster, lower-scoring games.

Schedule fatigue matters more in the NBA than any other major sport. A team on the third night of a back-to-back away game, facing a well-rested opponent in a building where the crowd runs hot, produces measurably different scoring patterns than the same team at home after three days of rest. Totals posted for those games frequently fail to fully account for rest differential, creating one of the more reliable systematic edges available throughout the regular season.

Typical NBA Game Total Ranges by Team Style

Team Profile Typical Total Range
Two high-pace, high-efficiency offenses 228 to 238
One elite offense vs. elite defense 218 to 226
Two strong defensive teams 210 to 220
Playoff game, slower tempo 208 to 220
Back-to-back game, depleted rosters 215 to 225

First-half and first-quarter totals offer additional market opportunities beyond the full-game line, focusing on early game trends and providing alternative strategies for capitalizing on fast or slow starts. These quarter and half totals are particularly useful when a team’s first-quarter tendencies diverge significantly from their overall game pace, which happens regularly throughout an 82-game season.

Line movement is one of the most reliable indicators of where sharp money is landing. Significant movement of three or more points on a total from opening to tip-off often reflects either confirmed injury news or professional-level analytical input that has not yet reached the wider market. Tracking opening lines alongside current prices before placing any NBA total bet is one of the highest-value research habits a bettor can develop heading into a full season.

How Do NBA Team Total Odds Work?

When we analyze NBA TEAM TOTALS, there are two important numbers for a bettor.

Teams Team Total (O/U) Odds
Miami Heat Over +112.5 -108
  Under +112.5 -114
LA Lakers Over +109.5 -116
  Under +109.5 -106

Looking at our odds table above, we can see the TEAM TOTALS set for both the Heat and the Lakers. Obviously, the TOTAL set for each team is the key information a bettor will need to focus on.

However, it is also important that we pay attention to the MONEYLINE that is associated with each possible wager.

When we are looking at the TEAM TOTAL for the Heat, we can see that the ML odds are telling us UNDER +112.5 is the betting favorite of the two options.

Looking at the TEAM TOTAL for the Lakers, the odds are telling us the OVER +109.5 is the favorite.

It’s not enough to pay attention only to the TOTAL. As a bettor, you have to understand the odds involved.

You won’t be profitable if you win 54% of your bets but only play favorites at -115 odds or lower.

But winning at a 54% rate and playing only odds of -105 or better would be very profitable.

You will also notice that TEAM TOTALS are almost always set with half-points, trying to avoid as many push (tied) bets as possible.

Using The BestOdds.com NBA Team Total BettingTable

Many NBA bettors love to focus on TEAM TOTALS because they have a good understanding of how one team will perform and find it easier to handicap just one team as opposed to both.

If you are thinking about betting on NBA TEAM TOTALS, then make sure to have BestOdds.com bookmarked throughout the season.

After each night of NBA action, BestOdds.com will update its TEAM TOTALS standings page.

A bettor can quickly see how a specific team has performed with their TEAM TOTAL wagers for the entire season to date.

NBA Team Total Betting Strategies

Using Player Prop Totals

NBA O/U and TEAM TOTALS betting is all about understanding matchups between the two teams involved.

This can be difficult for the average fan. Only some have the knowledge and passion for understanding how each team rotates and switches defensively, double-team opposition star players, and other key strategies teams use to play defense.

One team might give up a lot of points when Ja Morant comes to town because they don’t have the guards capable of playing elite defense against the Grizzlies best player.

However, that same team might not be as vulnerable when Giannis and his Milwaukee Bucks come to town because they have the size and bodies capable of playing elite defense against the Milwaukee Big Man.

This is where researching some player prop betting totals can help with TEAM TOTAL betting.

If Ja Morant is averaging 22 points a game, and his O/U for that night is 26.5 points, then right away, we learn the sportsbooks believe Morant will have a better-than-average scoring night.

We can use this information to help us decide if we like the Grizzlies TEAM TOTAL to go Over or Under the number.

If there is a chance that Morant is going to have a huge game and score 35+ points, we might want to lean OVER.

Shop Around

For a lot of sports bettors, watching games unfold is only a part of the entertainment package sports betting can provide.

Many of us enjoy the stats and data involved with betting on sports. The ability to pour through large amounts of information to find an edge against the sportsbooks.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. LA Clippers

Teams DraftKings FanDuel BetMGM
Milwaukee Over 104.5 | -115 104.5 | -110 105.5 | -110
Milwaukee Under 104.5 | -105 104.5 | -110 105.5 | -110
LA Clippers Over 105.5 | -112 105.5 | -115 106.5 | -115
LA Cippers Under 105.5 | -108 105.5 | -105 106.5 | -105

The single greatest advantage we have against the sportsbooks, is the ability to shop around and find the Best Odds for the bets we are playing that day.

Even if shopping around only finds an edge that is a 5 or 10% advantage, that difference in potential ROI will be significant over time.

If one of your betting goals is chasing profitability against the sportsbooks, shopping around to play only the Best Odds could be the difference you need to achieve profitability.
