There were some interesting outcomes on prop bets last week.
Most notably for me: Quinn Ewers.
After throwing for 349 yards and three touchdowns in an impressive upset victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2, Ewers’ passing yards prop was set at roughly 281.5 yards in his week three contest against the Wyoming Cowboys.
Ewers completed just 11 of 21 pass attempts for 131 yards. Ewers did score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one in the air and one on the ground, being responsible for three scores.
The sad thing is, Ewers had to score two touchdowns late, because the Longhorns and Cowboys were tied at 10 entering the fourth quarter!
It was a forgettable performance after such a prodigious showing the week prior.
While this game was largely controlled by Texas’ running back Jonathan Brooks (21 carries, 164 rushing yards), the output by the Longhorns’ quarterback put the ‘Ew’ in Ewers.
The best odds for Ewers’ passing yards prop against Baylor this Saturday is set at over 282.5 (-101) on Caesars.
After last week’s showing, I’m hesitant to take the over on that one.
Anyway, let’s explore some potential prop bets to make for this College Football Saturday in Week 4.
Jalen Milroe – QB, Alabama
The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the South Florida Bulls in Week 3, as expected.
The Tide won by a score of just 17-3, which was unexpected.
The main issue was the subpar play, and eventual benching, of quarterback Tyler Buchner.
Alabama Offensive Coordinator Tommy Rees brought Buchner to Tuscaloosa, Alabama through the transfer portal. They’ve had a working relationship since they were plying their respective trades in South Bend, Indiana while at Notre Dame.
In Week 3, it appears that head coach Nick Saban handed the keys of the offense to his OC and let Rees see what his boy Tyler Buchner could do.
It wasn’t pretty.
Saban has already declared that Milroe will be back under center in Week 4 against the Ole Miss Rebels.
I’d expect Milroe to get a stranglehold on the QB1 spot moving forward, and facing an Ole Miss offense that’s expected to score more than the three points that South Florida could muster, Milroe will need to prove it.
Pick: Milroe – OVER 208.5 Passing Yards
Best Odds: (-115) Caesars
Will Shipley – RB, Clemson
When discussing the best running backs currently playing in the NCAA, Will Shipley’s name belongs in the conversation.
While Clemson appears to be in a lost season, Shipley is still a talented focal point on a questionable offense.
Sure, Shipley only totaled 38 rushing yards last week against the Florida Atlantic Owls, but he’s still averaging 6.3 yards per carry and should see a heavier workload this week against stiffer competition; the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles.
Here’s a quick look at how the top running backs fared against Florida State’s defense in the Seminoles’ first three games.
- Week 1 vs. LSU – RB, Josh Williams (4 carries, 44 yds)
- Week 2 vs. Southern Miss – RB, Rodrigues Clark (15 car, 86 yds, TD)
- Week 3 at Boston College – RB, Kye Robichaux (21 car, 64, TD)
Considering that LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for 64 yards on 15 carries against Florida State in Week 1, and BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos ran for 95 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in Week 3, this Seminoles’ defense is beatable on the ground.
Shipley’s rushing yards prop is set at 66.5 on FanDuel.
They are asking Shipley to record just three more yards than Kye Robichaux did?
Give me that number before it’s gone.
Pick: Shipley – OVER 66.5 Rushing Yards
Best Odds: (-114) FanDuel
Troy Franklin – WR, Oregon
This week, the No. 10 Oregon Ducks host the No. 19 Colorado Buffaloes in what will probably be the most watched game of the week.
Interesting, considering that No. 6 Ohio State and No. 9 Notre Dame also play this week, but I digress.
Oregon wide receiver Troy Franklin has yet to post less than 83 receiving yards in any game this season.
Franklin will face off against a Colorado defense that just allowed three separate Colorado State Rams to eclipse 100 receiving yards last week.
The Buffs allowed three 100-yard receivers to Colorado State!
Colorado’s defensive secondary is going to take another bruising on Saturday, and the Ducks’ aerial combo of quarterback Bo Nix and receiver Franklin will be a common sighting this weekend.
Pick: Franklin – OVER 80.5 Receiving Yards
Best Odds: (-117) Caesars
Cameron Skattebo – RB, Arizona State
I think we can all agree, the name Skattebo is awesome.
Hopefully this week, against the No. 5 USC Trojans, we hear the name Skattebo often on a nationally televised game on FOX.
Another thing we can agree on, is that USC’s defense isn’t that great.
Sure, they’ve won their first three games by 28 or more points in each contest, but when you’ve played San Jose State, Nevada, and Stanford, that’s to be expected.
Fun Fact: Nevada and Stanford have lost to FCS teams this season.
When looking at the Trojans’ defense, they have been gashed on the ground, especially by San Jose State (198 rushing yards Week 1) and Stanford (209 rushing yards Week 3).
You can find Skattebo’s rushing yards prop for the solid value of over 55.5 yards (-114) on FanDuel, but I’m taking the value on his any time touchdown prop on BetMGM.
Skattebo will skedaddle over the goal line on Saturday.
Pick: Skattebo – Any Time Touchdown Best Odds: (+140) BetMGM
