A prop bet or proposition bet is a sports betting wager that is not tied to the final score or outcome of a game but rather a particular occurrence (or non-occurrence) that most often does not directly affect the outcome.

That sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is.

Prop bet examples can include but are not limited to:

  • Stat obtained by a specific player
  • Which team scores first
  • Which player scores first
  • Points scored in a particular quarter
  • Color of the Gatorade dumped on winning coach
  • Length of time for the national anthem

What Are Player Prop Bets?

Player props are bets on specific players and specific stat categories and are undoubtedly the most popular type of prop bet.

Typically, these player prop bets will be either an over or an under bet on a particular stat line.

For example, the oddsmakers may set a prop line of 75.5 receiving yards for a specific player, and you can bet the player will go over this value of 75.5 or stay under the 75.5 receiving yards mark.

An Over bet wins if the player notches 76 or more receiving yards in the game. Obviously, the Under wins if the player finishes with 75 or fewer yards in the game.

How Are Prop Lines Set?

Each player will have appropriate prop lines based on their skill level, consistency, matchup, and bookmaker’s expectation.

The sportsbooks will release prop lines based on their internal handicapping and how they expect the market to react.

The most common player props often have more accurate lines such as

  • passing yards
  • passing touchdowns
  • rushing yards
  • NBA points scored
  • Rebounds
  • MLB strikeouts
  • and more

Player Prop Bet Example

Here is a Passing Yards prop bet for Joe Burrow, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals.

You can bet the Over and would win if Joe Burrow throws for 267 yards or more.

On the other hand, you could bet the Under, and if Burrow finishes with 272 or fewer yards, you will cash.

What Is The Prop Cheat Sheet?

The BestOdds Player Prop Cheat Sheet, also known as the consistency sheet, is the fastest way to find the best prop bets for the day’s action.

We scan thousands of data points, betting odds, and historical inputs to find the streaks and value you need to make smarter prop bets.

Let’s break down what the Cheat Sheet shows.

Best Props Of The Day

Every day, BestOdds highlights three top props per league.

These prop bets have been cashing lately, AND our engine believes there is an edge or value to be had betting on them.

The above example shows

  • Player and his next opponent
  • How much edge* or value we project.
  • How often the player has won this prop bet recently
  • What and where the best odds are offered

*An Edge can be thought of as the hypothetical return on investment if you were able to repeatedly place this bet an infinite number of times.

Cheat Sheet Table

Under the three highlighted props, we can see the BestOdds Cheat Sheet table.

This table consists of tens or hundreds of bets for the upcoming slate of games.

The bettor can quickly sort by the league and bet type to find what they are looking for.

Why Prop Bets?

There is more value or edge for the sports bettor in betting player props than betting point spreads, moneylines, or team totals.

There are so many players, and player props are relatively new in comparison.

The sportsbooks have a more challenging time accurately determining an appropriate stat line for every player which means more opportunities for astute sports bettors.

The books and oddsmakers are very good at pricing team point spread and predicting who will win. It is a science that has been mastered over the last few decades.

Player props are new, and there are TONS of players, matchup nightmares, and obscure stat lines to find gems.

That is what we hunt for at BestOdds, and we have built the tools to help you find the value.
